As a leading personal injury law firm, we have had hundreds of personal injury cases that are results of a car accident. That said, we believe there are so many ways that these car accidents or personal cases could have been prevented. We decided to highlight a few new technology features that are starting to show up in 2018 or are becoming more and more common in all vehicles.
Although many will consider parking assist a luxury feature, it is as much a safety feature as it is a luxury upgrade. “How?”, you may ask. We all know that parallel parking can be a chore, even for the best drivers. Trying to reverse into a tight spot on a busy street can cause a tricky situation with approaching traffic from behind. Add in variables like low visibility, bad weather or a crying baby in the back seat and it can really create the perfect storm for a car accident. Which is why we consider a vehicle with parking assist a safer option.
Cameras and Sensors
The “blind spot” is an area on the car that is outside of the driver’s view. For this very reason, it might be one of the most dangerous spots to be in while driving and considered to be one of the leading causes of car accidents. Depending on your vehicle, there are many areas on the car where you can not see out of, but thanks to the technology, many of today’s vehicles come equipped with sensors that give you warning when there is an obstacle or car in your blind spot. Some of the more luxurious cars even have cameras that essentially eliminate the blind spot, creating a much safer driving experience.
Driver Attention Systems
You can have all the safety technology in the world to help you avoid car accidents but the human element is still part of the equation. Drivers still have to pay attention to the safety tools available in the car and unfortunately, human error still exists. In an article by Forbes, car makers like Mercedes, Volvo, and Cadillac are some of the manufacturers that are leading the way with driver attention technology that tracks how alert the driver is. This technology signals the driver when they are drowsy or inattentive. Technology like lane-monitoring and forward auto-braking also help prevent car accidents as the vehicle helps the driver maintain their space on the road. This also assists in helping to make split-second decisions in the event of an emergency braking situation. Some manufacturers are introducing technology that completely takes control of the vehicle steering to avoid car collisions. Although some automakers are starting to offer fully autonomous driving vehicles, we think that that technology is not quite available to the masses due to the price point of those types of vehicles. However, as technology advances, that is only a matter of time.
